Well we are back to the hospital routine now. I finished packing things for Zack Wednesday morning and headed into Philly. The room he has right now is twice the size of his last one and that is nice! Plus it is a room with a view. Last time we looked out over a roof and other buildings of the hospital. Not real interesting. This time we can see downtown Philly and even trees. Much better. He may end up moving back to the other side depending on if they need more beds since this room is a double. Because Zack may have had a certain bacteria last time (the reason people have to gown up to see him) he can not have a roommate. We will enjoy the view and space while he has it.

He did opt into a study program so that means he gets that drug 12 hours before his chemo. They wanted to start that at 9:00 am but it did not get up here until noon. That makes his schedule then that drug at 12:00 pm and then chemo from 12:00 am to 3:00 am. He will have chemo for 5 nights and then back to the waiting game to find out if the leukemia is gone.

Right now he is feeling fine. The effects of the chemo do not set in until about 7 days after they are done. He is trying to eat and exercise as much as he can before the chemo knocks him down. We have been catching up with the staff here and settling in.

Zack was admitted to the hospital today.

Nate and Zack headed in early this morning thinking he was just going in for the CAT scan and transfusion. When he was in clinic getting his transfusion he found out that he was being admitted and so they packed up and headed over to the hospital side.

He is in room 936 this time, back on the same floor. He got a lot of hugs from the nurses welcoming him back.

Today they did the CAT scan and then a test on his heart that they do before starting chemo. Tomorrow morning someone will come in early and explain a “clinical trial” he could opt into this time. If he decides to do that they would start that drug at 9 am. Then the chemo he is getting this time is made up of 3 drugs that he will get at night from 9:00 pm to 12:00 pm for 5 nights.

He will have bone marrow tests done on day 3, day 14 and day 28 so they said to figure on 30 days for this round.

He wasn’t mentally ready to be admitted today and the same goes for us also. We all thought we would have a few days notice before going back in, but we will adjust. I will pack for him tonight and head in early tomorrow and help him move in ☺.

Our prayer list for now:

1. That this round of chemo will get him into remission. 2. NO INFECTIONS this time. 3. Mental and physical strength for Zack. 4. Continued protection as we drive into Philly.

This morning I was feeling the pressure of having too much to do before he went back in and in walks Sarah and Doris to clean the house! I was ready for the hugs and fellowship as we cleaned.

We will be updating the web site as soon as we can. We try to do it everyday, but we are not always able to get to a computer to get it done or we are just too tired when we get home to do it. We will do our best!

Thank you so much for your prayers. We can not do this without them. God said He would be strong in our weakness and He has proved that over and over to us as we are very weak. He has not failed us. On to phase two of the journey.

Zack is heading back to the hospital on Wednesday.

Tomorrow morning we head in for a 9:00 am CAT scan on his lungs then go to Clinic for more palettes. Then home to pack.

Dr. Luger called and Zack’s bone marrow showed 30% leukemia. He was at 90% back on August 1st when he went in, so that means the first two rounds of chemo got it down to 30%. He will be getting another round of chemo to get him into remission. At this point we do not know how many days of chemo he will be getting or how long to expect he will be in the hospital for this round. We may end up getting some more information tomorrow otherwise not until he checks into the hospital. We also do not know exactly what time he will be going to the hospital on Wednesday. They will call when they have his room ready for him. We will update as soon as we can after we get some information.

It has been good to be home. We are just in a bit of a scramble right now getting ready to go back in.

Last Thursday I took Zack into Philly and it was a long day for him since he needed platelets and red blood cells. At least it was a rainy day so he wasn’t missing anything.

Zack did go to church on Sunday and it was good to be able to see everyone and be there. That night he also went to hear his cousin play and sing at his church so it was a full day.

We were back at Penn yesterday for his doctor visit. His platelets were low so before she could do the bone marrow test he had to have a transfusion. When she was getting ready to do the test I started asking questions. The big question has been is this leukemia because of the chemo he had when young or just another cancer? She said that they have no way of knowing for sure which it is, but they think that it is the same cancer, in that it showed itself as A.L.L. when he was young and this time as A.M.L. Thought they can not rule out the fact that some of the drugs he had before do contribute to A.M.L. many years after having them. Dr. Luger had talked to his doctor from CHOP and she was surprised to hear that he had leukemia again. It is uncommon for them to see this happen. I know before we had said that this is a separate case of cancer from the first, but when you see so many different doctors you get different opinions on it all. I know that two of the doctors he saw when in the hospital had different views of it. As Dr. Luger said, they just do not have a definite way of knowing why.

This bone marrow test will show her what step they need to take next. The last bone marrow test showed 70% leukemia but that was abnormal since he was on the drug to help his bone marrow produce white cells. Dr. Luger should have the results by Friday or Monday at the latest. She will then call to tell him when she needs him to come in for his next appointment. The visiting nurse will come out Thursday to the house to draw his blood for testing. If he is low on platelets again then he would need to go in Friday for those. Otherwise we wait to go back until we hear from Dr. Luger.

We are all feeling more rested and have enjoyed the time at home together. Zack is getting out more and that is good. He still can not do as much as he would normally but we do see a marked improvement from how he was when he first came home.

This past week with Zack has been a good one. His cheek continues to heal and the swelling is noticeably reduced. He is able to eat regular meals and he does some walking for exercise.

We took Zack back to HUP last Thursday and today to get platelets. He goes back on Thursday for more platelets and probably red blood cells.

His white cell count is down significantly from when he came home (good because that means the leukemia is not too active, and bad because it means his immune system is not strong) so he cannot go out in public and shouldn’t be around anyone who is sick.

We are very grateful that God has allowed Zack to be home with no infections or fevers and that he is gradually regaining some strength.

1. His strength will continue to increase 2. He will be able to sleep soundly at night 3. He will stay infection and fever free 4. The bone marrow biopsy next Monday will clearly indicate what the next treatment should be
