Zack was thankful that he got to attend church one last time before the hospital stay.

After church we have Ginner’s Birthday picnic (she turned 20 on the 26th). Culbert’s, Baskin’s and cousin’s come over to celebrate. We had good food and laughs and go cart racing. A busy weekend but good.

We worked around the house to be ready to face the next month. Esther and Deb spent a lot of the day shopping to stock up on supplies and get ready for Ginner’s birthday party the next day.

Nate, Deb and Zack head back to HUP. Again more blood work and then we wait to talk to Dr. Luger. She tells us that Zack has A.M.L., Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. When Zack was 3 ½ he had A.L.L., Acute Lymophocytic Leukemia. It wasn’t back, it was new! That was not what we thought we would hear. Dr. Luger gave us the answers about what was coming next.

1. No school this semester for Zack.

2. expect the first hospital stay to last at least a month

3. how they would treat AML, at least the induction phase

Deb drives Zack to the Reading Hospital to have blood work done. Later in the afternoon HUP calls and Zack can stay home for the weekend but his white count did go up so they will be putting him on medication to keep that down. We also have an appointment Friday morning to sit down with Dr. Luger and get the information we need about his leukemia. Today the change in his blood is showing in that he is tired and sleeping during the day. Nate, Esther and Zack go and watch his soccer team’s championship game (they won!).

We wait all day for “the call” from Dr. Luger with an answer for us. Everyone is a mess except for Zack. He worked a full day of work and went home at 4:30 pm. Nate, Deb, and Esther were still at work, Ginner was also working and Charlotte was home when Zack got the call from Dr. Luger that yes, he has leukemia. She said he would need to check into the hospital Thursday or Monday at the latest. He would need to get a blood test done Thursday morning and depending on his white blood count she would let him have the weekend at home or he would need to check in on Thursday.

Wednesday night was a night of crying and many phone calls and people coming in to comfort us all.
